From my bedroom. My bedroom is upstairs from my router, so running an ethernet cable would be out of the question since I rent and I don't want to go drilling through the floor of my apartment. So I want to get a wifi device for it. This model was designed to work with the original Airport card which only supported B speeds and doesn't support WPA2. I'd really like to be able to use G speeds and WPA2.
So that leaves me with having to find a USB wifi adapter that will work on a G4 and with Mac OS X 10.4 (this is the latest version this computer will run, I believe). I'm having trouble finding devices that I can verify will work on this architecture and have drivers available for 10.4. I was hoping someone might be able to suggest a device or a way to find such a device. Has OS X driver for 10.4: 3 out of 5 eggsOn an Old Mac Mini Pros: Simple, easy set-up. Works on an old Mac mini OS X 10.4.9), this is why I bought two units.
Picked up signal in relatively short time. Good reception at a long range (my antenna is downstairs, my Mac is upstairs at the opposite end of the house, about 45-50 feet away). Cons: Need a couple of tries to get it going. Maybe a bit slow. Documentation is a bit light in details. 5 out of 5 eggs Chicklet Pros: Works with Mac OSX 10.5 on an Intel MacBook. Also tested with Win7 x64.
Both are plug and play. Very fast performance.
Discrete design. Looks like a chicklet.
PowerPC:: How To Use Linksys Wireless Adapter In Powerbook Aug 10, 2008 Anyway, I have a Powerbook G4 that's about five years old. It doesn't have an internal wireless card so I bought a Linksys wireless adapter to plug into the side of my computer when I first got the computer. It worked fine for years.
I recently reformatted my hard drive and now when I insert the wireless adapter it no longer will allow me to connect to the internet. I'm aware that Linksys doesn't have drivers for Mac users so I'm kinda confused how I got it to work in the first place. I don't remember installing any third party software, but I may have- it was a few years ago.
What I should do to allow me to use my linksys card in my Mac? I've heard of Orangeware but I'm not sure if that's the solution. Oh one more thing, when I plug the card in, an icon appears in the top right corner that shows something is plugged into the port but doesn't allow me to click on it and search for wireless connections. ADVERTISEMENT Jun 17, 2007 i really want a new iMac but can't afford it right now. So i was thinking of getting an older iMac to replace the pc we have now. If i do do this can i use the wireless router that i have now with an iMac G3 or G4? Jan 1, 2007 It got REALLY hot.
I had to snap my hand back after touching it, and my hand was red. I noticed it had turned off, so I went to see what was the matter. It felt hot enough to possibly catch fire. Oct 19, 2009 I recently purchased an old Powerbook G4 since my iBook G4 recently died on me (After 5+ years). I'm using the Powerbook for a temp computer until Arrandale comes out on the next revision of the macbook/macbook pro.
My question is can I use my iBook 45W adapter to power the Powerbook? I believe the original adapters for the Powerbooks were 65W. If it is possible are there any fire hazards of the power brick overheating or shorting out the Powerbook?
Jul 23, 2007 The 45 watt power adapter on my 12 inch powerbook is on it's last legs. I have access to a very cheap replacement but it's a 65 watt adapter that came with the 15 & 17 inch models. Is it safe to use this as a replacement? Apr 15, 2008 I received an old powerbook from a friend today and i plugged it all in and everything and the power adapter in the back and the ring lit up orange but when i went to turn it on nothing happened at all i didnt hear anything inside, it just didnt turn on. I really want to find the problem and/or fix it up.
I dont want to part with it as i need an extra laptop. Jan 29, 2006 So i recently bought a Zonet usb wireless adapter (ZEW2051) on tiger direct for around 7 bucks and now want to use it with my ibook (my airport card isn't working).
I have seen solutions for other cards but can't seem to find an answer for this one. System Profiler recognizes it as Quote: USB2.0 WLAN: Version:48.02 Bus Power (mA):500 Speed:Up to 480 Mb/sec Manufacturer:ZyDAS Product ID:0x1211 Vendor ID:0x0ace Jul 2, 2009 Hi guys. I need some help with my Airport.
I currently have a D-Link DIR-655 router. The wireless is wonderful when it works but lately the problem is the network has disappeared from my Airport list. I've tried reinstalling the software and it has temporarily fixed the problem but after a minute or so the network vanishes (but I'm still able to connect to it via iPhone). Anyone know what the problem is? I'm currently running 10.5.7 on a 15' Pbook G4.

The adapter is a WPC54G Oh one last thing, when I plug the card in, an icon appears in the top right corner that shows something is plugged into the port but doesn't allow me to click on it and search for wireless connections. Jan 14, 2010 When I try to print from my Powerbook G4 to my HP 6500 wireless printer it will not work. I have found out that if I turn off/on the printer then it will print. So, it must be an issue with the computer not waking the printer from a sleep mode. Anyone have a solution to this that doesn't consist of me turning off then on the printer? I have tried to reinstall a few times with no avail.
Nov 5, 2005 I have a powerbook, and im tryin to get my wireless internet workin with my linksys wireless router.but i need some sort of password encryption cause apple reads things different from windows. Jun 25, 2009 I have a Linksys Wireless Router and a Linksys Modem, the router is 6 years old or so 802.11b, how much faster would the Internet be if I had a combined Linksys wireless router/modem versus the 802.11b that I have now?
Would I see a huge difference? I am running my Macbook off it and an olde Toshiba laptop. Aug 23, 2010 I currently have an old technology 2-Wire modem and I hear its not the 'friendliest' with Macs. Especially when configured in wireless mode. Thus, I'm thinking of replacing our old 2-Wire with new technology Linksys WAG160N modem/router (for my current 10 Megs DSL service). URL If you have this Linksys modem/Wireless Router, any good, bad & ugly on it?
Jul 29, 2009 I want to fully convert to the apple eco-system but can't afford the new airport extreme right now. Model number of the used airport is EbM8799LL/A Nov 11, 2007 After upgrading to Leopard my Mac Book Pro continuously drops the connection to our wireless connection.
After many attempts the only method I found to correct the situation is to perform a restart. Before the OS upgrade the wireless connection worked perfectly.
I am connecting through a Linksys router with a Time Warner cable connection. Feb 7, 2009 I have a new unibody macbook pro and print from it using a wireless hp officejet pro 7410 all in one printer. I have a linksys wrt150n router. My pc laptop prints fast from it but the mac prints very slow. The printing actually stops for a while then starts again.
It doesn't seem to do this all the time. I can't figure out what would slow it down. Mar 23, 2009 I have several questions before I make my purchase. I've got 2 computers in my upstairs bedroom that are wireless. I currently have a Wireless router which is a Linksys WRT54G. It's already getting on in age so I was thinking of replacing it with a better wireless router.
I'm deciding weather I should go with a Linksys N or go the apple route. Will I get faster internet if I go with a Linksys Wireless N? What is the difference between G and N?I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule because I wanted an automatic backup of my data.Is a time capsule going to perform the same as a Linksys? Which router is better? What is the difference between Time Capsule and Airport extreme.

Are they basically the same with the only difference being the hardrive? If I get a Time Capsule then do I still need a Linksys router? Is it easy to setup a wireless network using a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme? Is it easy to configure as a Linksys? Jun 10, 2009 I'm lucky if I can get more than five feet away from my Linksys wireless-G router before the Airport Extreme says it's getting no bars.
My son also has an Airport Extreme card in his iMac; connection is always iffy, even though his computer is barely four feet from the router. Do I need a wireless-N router? Is there no backwards compatibility here (e.g. Shouldn't a wireless-G router be able to work with wireless-N Airport Extreme cards?) Oct 11, 2006 I have a Linksys wireless router set up (WRT54G) and my PC desktop and laptop connect fine to the internet with wire and wireless.
I installed an airport card in our Power Mac G4 but this cannot detect my wireless network. I have it connected now with an ethernet cable running through the kitchen but want to get rid of the cable. Is there a compatibility issue with airport and a Linksys wireless network? The Mac recognizes the airport card so I hope that means that it is good.
(I got it from eBay used) This Mac is the farthest away from the router so I guess my next try is to see if I can move the router a little bit closer. I am a newbie to wireless so possibly I have a setting wrong. I did tell the router the mac addresses of all of the computers that I want to connect. Mar 18, 2012 Imac and iphone lost internet connectivity via Linksys wireless router. Ehternet works fine. Keep getting note about 'self-assigned' ip.
I have tried everything I have found and read. Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8) Oct 8, 2008 Which would be better, a USB wireless adapter or installing an actual wireless card? The computer is a PowerMac G5 1.6GHz and I want to add wireless capability to it.
Which card is the best and which USB adapter is the best. We'll be using a Linksys router. Jun 25, 2007 I have the 65W white square adapter for my 17' Powerbook, and I have the Yo-Yo adapter for my 12' Ibook (G3 500 mhz).Is there any reason why I cannot use the 65W adapter on my 12' book in place of the Yo-Yo adapter? (I know for power requirement reasons I cannot use the Yo-Yo on my 17') Jul 24, 2007 I was looking at getting a new Airport Extreme base but I'm not sure if it will work with my 15' G4 Powerbook at all? I currently have a Linksys WRT54G which is OK but is such a pain to set up when it does happen to crash once in a while too.
Besides, I don't think I'm getting the most powerful signal I can get too. Besides saying that the new wireless 'N' has 5 times more speed than the wireless 'G', is it worth it to switch over from a linksys to the Airport Extreme? Mar 31, 2009 I just bought a Powerbook G4 from my school and the internet is sparatic but it is just at my house. I went to my friends house on Friday and it worked fine and at my school it does to. When I get home it either doesn't connect or goes from four bars to two bars. I have a Macbook and that works fine with the internet. I have tried re setting the router and nothing works.
I have a Linksys router. Nov 15, 2006 I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity? Aug 12, 2008 I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using URL with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that. So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.
HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says 'looking up google.ca.' Or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site.
When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains. ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine. Any thoughts on this? Jan 21, 2008 Are there any that a store like best Buy sells that are compatible with a Mac / Macbook?
I need to pick up a signal in another room, and the only way would be to run a long USB cord attached to a wireless adapter.but it seems like none of the bigger brands sell Mac-compatible versions. If anyone knows of a compatible adapter, please post about it!
Jun 14, 2008 I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro and will be moving it to a room that does not have a wired internet connection but does have wireless in the house. Other than getting a USB wireless adapter is there any way else so I can take advantage of the wireless signal to get online using my Mac Pro? Apr 25, 2009 I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right.
What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.
Sep 3, 2010 I have a Mac Mini G4 with PowerPC processor and I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for obtaining a wireless adapter of some sort to use with it.
